Hello, my name is Lisa Steciuk and I recently started as the Environmental Coordinator with the Mountain Métis. I have spent the last several years upgrading my knowledge and skills in mapping and historical documentation by completing a joint University degree in Geography and Anthropology with a minor in Archaeology through the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC).
Other areas of interest are Grande Cache Lake and the three lakes at Pierre Grey. We are in the process of setting up a series of engagement sessions with the community to discuss the traditional plants and aquatic species around the local lakes and waterways. The events will include questions and discussions which are related to community traditional knowledge and current concerns of the local water sources.
I have also been working with the Peace Airshed Zone Association which monitors different elements of air pollution around high construction activities. PAZA provided a monitor to Milner Power and will be providing one to CST Coal. The monitors provide us with accessible data we can use to compare air quality over time. Air monitors are available to be placed in local areas which are of concern from the effects of industrial activities. I have also completed the Environmental Monitoring Program through UNBC. Since May I have been working on a monitoring program for the local waterways with the focus on Victor Lake with the Lake Water Management Society. I recently completed water testing of Victor Lake on June 15, 2023. I was accompanied by Jacqueline Kirby, a junior biologist from the Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance, who provided information and training in the use of the water probe and other aquatic measuring supplies provided by the Alberta Lake Management Society. Victor Lake is the first of the lakes and waterways in our area which will be included in regular monitoring.
